Remote Learning Workspace Success

As many parents face the challenge of educating their children from home, there are a few things parents can do to help set their children up for success. Every workspace looks different, but there are a few key items that can help you and your child to find success in this new learning environment.

  1. Whether it’s your dining room table or a separate desk, have your child work in the same area.

  2. Designate a space for your children’s work and devices to go. This can be the back pack from last year, a specific school caddy, a drawer, or a basket.

  3. Set a schedule so your children have consistency. This includes sitting down at the same time to start school each day. If possible, it’s helpful to start the day a few minutes before school.

  4. Review the expectations of school in your house. This can include sitting up in front of the camera, not eating or drinking next to your device, or remaining “muted” on the camera until the child is called on.

  5. Let your child know how to ask for help from you during school. This can be a hand raise, coming and getting you, or even flipping a colored card over (green means “I’m good”, yellow means “I need help.”)

  6. To help your child understand their day you can use a visual schedule, planner, or even first-then visuals. Adjust this to the age/understanding level of your child.

  7. Set timers for how long work will take. This can help them to understand when work is done.

Most importantly, be positive, flexible, and focus on what is going right. Make changes as necessary for your child and speak to their teacher if you’re struggling so that they can provide support as needed.
